Patel, a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, has faced criticism in the past for perpetuating the unfounded claim that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulently taken away from Trump. Additionally, he has been known to propagate baseless conspiracy theories alleging that individuals within the “deep state” have been involved in efforts to undermine Trump’s presidency.
Following Trump’s announcement in December of his intention to nominate Patel to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), controversial remarks made by Patel in 2023 to another close Trump ally have resurfaced. During a podcast conversation with Steve Bannon, Patel asserted that Trump would take action against journalists, lawyers, and judges whom he believes have treated him unfairly. Patel expressed his determination to utilize legal avenues to address what he perceives as injustices committed by certain members of the legal system.
“We will adhere to the facts and legal processes, seeking justice through the court system to rectify the actions of judges and lawyers who, in our view, have pursued politically motivated cases,” Patel declared. He went on to state, “We will identify and confront not only those within the government but also individuals in the media. Yes, we will hold accountable those in the media who have disseminated falsehoods about American citizens aiding in what we believe to be election fraud favoring Joe Biden.”
During an appearance on “Meet the Press,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, expressed his belief that if confirmed, Patel would prioritize the FBI’s core mission and work towards restoring public trust in the institution. Thune underscored the need for reform within the agency, emphasizing the importance of enhancing confidence and transparency within the FBI, which he believes has significantly diminished.
“The FBI is an organization that requires restructuring and a fresh approach. … I am of the opinion that trust and faith in the FBI have been greatly diminished, presenting an opportunity for improvement,” Thune shared with host Kristen Welker. “I had the opportunity to meet with him. I am confident he comprehends the agency’s mission, and should he advance through the confirmation process, I trust that he will take his responsibilities seriously and focus on initiatives aimed at enhancing the FBI’s ability to safeguard the American people while upholding accountability,” added Thune.
When asked about his stance on supporting Patel’s confirmation during the upcoming full Senate vote, Thune declined to disclose his position, citing his commitment to ensuring a fair and thorough evaluation of nominees.
“At this juncture, I have refrained from publicizing or sharing my views on individual nominees. My primary role is to guarantee that each nominee undergoes a comprehensive and unbiased review,” Thune remarked.
