Steve Goncalves, the father of one of the University of Idaho students tragically killed in a stabbing incident in 2022, has expressed his thoughts after prosecutors revealed a selfie taken by the suspect, Bryan Kohberger.
In an interview, Goncalves, whose daughter Kaylee Goncalves was among the victims, shared his belief that Kohberger took the selfie as a way to glorify his alleged crime. Describing it as a “trophy,” Goncalves suggested that Kohberger may have viewed it as a symbol of his perceived success in evading justice.
While Latah County Prosecutor William Thompson confirmed that Kohberger took the photo shortly after the brutal incident in Moscow, he did not comment on its significance in relation to the murders. The prosecution is seeking to introduce the photo as evidence based on the account of a surviving witness who mentioned the suspect’s distinctive features.
Both Thompson and Kohberger’s attorney, Anne Taylor, refrained from commenting due to legal restrictions. The case involves the tragic deaths of four young women, including Kaylee, who had returned to Moscow for a final weekend with her friends before starting a new job in Texas.
The investigation, which led to Kohberger’s arrest, revealed DNA evidence and surveillance footage linking him to the crime scene. The heartbreaking case continues to unfold as authorities seek justice for the victims.
In a recent development in the case, the suspect, Kohberger, is set to stand trial for the murders while maintaining his innocence. His lawyer, Anne Taylor, presented an alibi stating that he was driving alone on the night of the crime in a vehicle matching the one seen at the scene. The trial is scheduled to begin on Aug. 11 in Boise County, Idaho, after a change of venue was granted. If found guilty, Kohberger could face the death penalty. Despite the serious charges, he remains confident, expressing his belief in being acquitted during the trial. Kohberger chose not to enter a plea in court, resulting in a not guilty plea being entered on his behalf.
