World No. 1 and reigning FedEx Cup champion Scottie Scheffler has been forced to withdraw from The Sentry tournament after undergoing surgery to repair a cut on his hand sustained in a mishap on Christmas. The tournament, which was set to take place from Jan. 2-5 in Kapalua, Hawaii, will see Scheffler’s absence.
According to a statement released by Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, on behalf of the PGA Tour, the incident occurred on Christmas Day while Scheffler was preparing dinner. He sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass. The surgery was necessary as small glass fragments remained in his palm. The recovery process is expected to take three to four weeks, with Scheffler aiming to return to full health in due course. Unfortunately, his participation in The Sentry is no longer possible, with his next scheduled event being The American Express from Jan. 16-19 in La Quinta, California.
On Dec. 10, Scheffler made history by joining Tiger Woods as one of the only players to win the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA’s Player of the Year for three consecutive years. The 28-year-old golfer achieved remarkable success in 2023, becoming the first player since Woods in 2007 to secure seven official PGA Tour victories in a single calendar year.
