Salah and Russo Dominate Footballer of the Year Awards in England!

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was named the “Footballer of the Year” in England by soccer writers for a historic third time on Friday, tying the record. Meanwhile, Arsenal striker Alessia Russo clinched the women’s award.

Salah had previously received this accolade from the Football Writers’ Association in 2018 and 2022, joining Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as the only other player to achieve this feat three times. Established in 1948, the FWA’s award is the oldest individual soccer honor globally.

With over 900 members casting their votes, Salah secured an impressive 90% majority, marking the “biggest winning margin this century.” His Liverpool teammate, Virgil van Dijk, claimed the second spot, followed by Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.

Leading the Premier League this season with the most goals (28) and assists (18), Salah played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s triumph, securing their second title in five years.

In the women’s category, Russo outshone Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw and Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey. FWA chair John Cross highlighted Russo’s standout performances in the Women’s Champions League.

Arsenal, currently in second place in the Women’s Super League, advanced to the Champions League final after a stunning semifinal victory over Lyon, the eight-time champions. They are set to face Barcelona in the title match.
