KYIV (Reuters) – Russian forces persist in launching attacks in the vicinity of the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk with the aim of encircling it from the south and severing supply routes to Ukrainian troops, as disclosed by the Ukrainian military on Saturday. The Ukrainian military emphasized the ongoing tactical significance of the capture of the road and rail hub in the eastern Donetsk region, highlighting the potential for creating substantial challenges for the Ukrainian army along the eastern front while facilitating Russia’s ability to fortify and advance its front line towards the west.
Viktor Trehubov, the spokesperson for Ukraine’s Khortytsia group of forces, reported to Ukrainian national television that the “Pokrovsk direction remains the hottest” and detailed that Russian forces initiated 34 attacks within the past 24 hours, with a concentrated effort to breach Ukrainian defenses south of Pokrovsk. The city houses a critical mine that serves as the primary provider of coking coal to Ukraine’s erstwhile significant steel industry, with a pre-war populace estimated at approximately 60,000 residents, of which about 11,000 are believed to remain within the city limits.
Trehubov elaborated that Russian forces are strategically attempting to disrupt supply routes by deploying small contingents of soldiers to settlements situated south of Pokrovsk. He underscored the avoidance of direct engagement within the urban confines of the city by Russian forces, as it entails the prospect of intense urban combat. Consequently, the Russian troops are initially pursuing alternative routes to circumvent the city and interpose logistical chains, according to Trehubov’s assessment.
