Online dating apps have made searching for love more convenient, but finding that special someone remains as challenging as ever. A charming photo and a simple “hello” may not always be enough to stand out, leading many to seek assistance from artificial intelligence when feeling stuck on what to say.
A recent study on American singles conducted by dating app Match.com and The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University revealed that 1 in 4 singles, and nearly half of Gen Z individuals, are utilizing AI to enhance their dating experiences. This marks a significant 333% increase from just a year ago.
“People are turning to AI for various purposes,” noted social health expert Kasley Killam. “It’s inevitable that individuals are seeking AI assistance for dating advice.” Capitalizing on this trend are AI dating assistants, which offer guidance on conversation starters, tone, and maintaining engaging discussions.
One such app, Rizz, known as Gen Z-speak for “charisma,” provides objective advice around the clock for those who cannot afford human dating coaches or need instant support. Users can upload conversation screenshots, and Rizz generates replies using AI technology, learning and improving based on the user’s preferences over time.
Similarly, Keepler, a dating-optimization app, assists users in navigating scenarios like “ghosting.” The app’s feature “Keri,” an in-house relationship guide, helps with crafting messages for difficult situations, such as letting someone down gently or seeking feedback after being ghosted.
While these AI dating assistants aim to support users in their dating endeavors, it’s important to note that they are not intended as therapy tools. Platforms like Hinge and Grindr are also incorporating AI features, such as Hinge’s “Prompt Feedback,” to provide immediate guidance on profile creation.
As the use of AI in dating continues to grow, questions around authenticity arise, but for many, these tools serve as valuable aids in navigating the complexities of modern romance.
One 36-year-old Rizz user, who preferred to remain anonymous for privacy reasons, shared with CBS MoneyWatch that he understands why some may view using AI for communication as insincere, but he personally sees it as a way to differentiate himself from others. Despite receiving skepticism from some of his dates upon revealing he receives coaching from Rizz, he finds the service beneficial as an icebreaker. He noted, “For me, it’s helpful in starting conversations, grabbing someone’s attention, and then allowing me to authentically be myself.” Social health expert Killam mentioned that AI dating tools can be valuable if used honestly and not overly relied upon. She warned against substituting AI for genuine human connection instead of complementing it.
