Helm.ai, a company backed by Honda Motor, has introduced its camera-based system called Helm.ai Vision to interpret urban environments. The company is currently in discussions with various automakers to implement its self-driving technology in mass-market vehicles. Helm.ai is collaborating with Honda to integrate its technology into the upcoming 2026 Honda Zero series of electric vehicles, allowing users to drive hands-free and divert their attention from the road. CEO Vladislav Voroninski stated that Helm.ai is engaged in talks with numerous OEMs and is progressing towards deploying its technology in production vehicles through a licensing business model. While Helm.ai’s approach mirrors Tesla’s reliance on camera-based systems over costlier lidar and radar sensors, the company also has models compatible with other sensors. However, industry experts emphasize the importance of using multiple sensors for safety, as cameras may underperform in low-visibility scenarios. Helm.ai Vision, which combines camera images to generate a comprehensive view of the surroundings, has garnered investments from companies like Goodyear Ventures and Sungwoo HiTech. The system is adaptable to various hardware platforms, allowing automakers to seamlessly integrate it into their existing vehicle systems alongside their own technologies for predicting and planning vehicle movements.
