Revolutionary Robotics Firm to Resume Search for MH370

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s government has granted final approval for a Texas-based marine robotics company to recommence the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which is believed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean over a decade ago. Cabinet ministers have agreed to terms and conditions for a contract with Texas-based Ocean Infinity based on a “no-find, no-fee” model to resume the seabed search operation at a new 15,000-square-kilometer (5,800-square-mile) site in the ocean, as stated by Transport Minister Anthony Loke in a release on Wednesday. Ocean Infinity will receive $70 million only if wreckage is located. The Boeing 777 aircraft disappeared from radar shortly after departing on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board, mostly Chinese nationals, on a journey from Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, to Beijing. Satellite data indicated that the plane deviated from its intended route and flew south toward the far-southern Indian Ocean, where it is believed to have gone down. Despite an extensive multinational search, no clues to its whereabouts were found, although debris was discovered on the east African coast and Indian Ocean islands. A private search conducted by Ocean Infinity in 2018 yielded no results. The final approval for a new search comes after Malaysia provisionally approved plans for a fresh search three months ago. Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Punkett previously mentioned that the company has enhanced its technology since 2018 and is collaborating with numerous experts to analyze data, narrowing the search area to the most promising location. Loke mentioned that his ministry will soon finalize a contract with Ocean Infinity without disclosing further details on the terms. The company has reportedly dispatched a search vessel to the site and suggested that the optimal period for the search is between January and April. “The government is dedicated to continuing the search effort and delivering closure for the families of the passengers of flight MH370,” he stated in a release.
