Revolutionary Cosmetology School Empowering Diverse Beauty!

Located in Minneapolis, Taylor’d Cosmetology school was established with the intent of providing students with knowledge and skills in ethnic skin care. The CEO of Taylor’d Cosmetology, Nubiah Taylor, expressed pride in the beauty of hair and skin among ethnic communities but noted the lack of platforms to celebrate and showcase it. Taking her passion for esthetics and entrepreneurship, Taylor assumed multiple roles within the school, including owner, CEO, instructor, and manager. Growing up in north Minneapolis, Taylor aimed to empower individuals to pursue careers in the beauty industry.

Reflecting on her own journey to becoming an esthetician, Taylor noticed a gap in traditional beauty schools in catering to the needs of clients with Black, Indigenous, and people of color. This realization inspired her to establish Taylor’d Cosmetology in north Minneapolis, focusing on addressing the unique requirements of ethnic skin and nails. Over the past year, the school has been dedicated to educating students on the specialized care needs of clients with melanated skin.

Support for Taylor’d Cosmetology came in the form of a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to aspiring entrepreneurs of color. Through a competitive process akin to “Shark Tank,” Taylor successfully pitched her vision to the organization, securing the necessary funding to bring her dream school to life. The facility is divided into classroom spaces for theoretical instruction and hands-on practice areas for students to hone their skills.

A key aspect of the curriculum at Taylor’d Cosmetology is the practical experience gained through serving real clients. Community involvement is crucial, as students are required to perform services such as eyebrow shaping, facials, makeup application, and waxing on willing participants. By engaging with diverse clientele, students not only refine their technical abilities but also gain valuable exposure to different skin types and beauty preferences.

Diversity is celebrated at Taylor’d Cosmetology, with students from various cultural backgrounds coming together to pursue their passion for beauty. Taylor highlighted the school’s demographic composition, revealing a student body comprising 60% Black, 30% Latino, and 10% White individuals. For aspiring entrepreneurs like Jasmine Winn, attending Taylor’d Cosmetology represents a significant step towards achieving their career goals. Winn emphasized the practical knowledge and foundational skills acquired through the esthetics program, setting her on a path towards future success.

As Taylor’d Cosmetology prepares to enroll students for its eighth class cohort, the school anticipates reaching a milestone in its second year of operation. Federal funding opportunities will be available to students, alleviating financial burdens associated with pursuing a career in esthetics. This support ensures that aspiring professionals have access to quality education and training without incurring substantial out-of-pocket expenses.
