Lisa and Andrew Yeager, residents of a 1920s bungalow in Birmingham’s Crestwood area, found themselves needing more space after living in their beloved home for 12 years. Despite considering moving, they were determined to stay in their cherished neighborhood near the park where they had made many memories with their two sons. With the assistance of interior designer Laura Harris, the Yeagers decided to renovate their outdated bungalow to better suit their family’s needs.
The renovation plans included adding a second bathroom, updating closets, reconfiguring doorways, and transforming the basement into a functional living space. By incorporating practical design elements and making the most of the existing structure, Laura was able to create a more livable and efficient layout for the Yeager family. The renovation also preserved the home’s original features, such as ceiling beams and built-in bookshelves, while updating the overall look and feel of the space.
Designer Mackin Thompson joined the project to assist with finishes and fixtures, helping to maintain the bungalow’s charm while introducing a fresh color palette throughout the home. By creatively incorporating existing furniture and decor pieces, Mackin was able to blend sentimental items with new additions to furnish the space without exceeding the budget.
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the design team, the Yeagers’ renovated bungalow now offers a blend of modern functionality and historic charm, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for their family to enjoy for years to come.

The floor covering is from Rugs USA. “It’s so comfortable and has created a little haven for us that the house didn’t have before,” says Lisa, noting it was previously a pass-through bedroom. Taking a cue from the drapery and matching bolster, Mackin splashed the trim in Farrow & Ball’s French Gray (No. 18) to standout against walls painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Alabaster.
