A recent surge in violence has once again plunged the Democratic Republic of Congo into chaos, as Rwandan-backed M23 rebels launched a surprise attack on Congolese government forces in the South Kivu province. This brazen act shattered a brief period of calm and highlighted the tenuous nature of the peace in the region.
The conflict escalated on a Tuesday morning with heavy shelling raining down on the already war-torn region, just days after a regional summit had called for an immediate ceasefire. The M23 rebels, known for their control over swathes of eastern DR Congo, including the strategic city of Goma, have now set their sights on Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu.
