Although a dog’s breed does not always dictate their behavior, certain breed traits are undeniable. Siberian Huskies, for instance, are renowned for their chattiness (or melodious vocalizations, depending on perspective), while Bloodhounds possess extraordinary olfactory abilities. Then there are the beloved Labrador Retrievers, whose affections lie with three things above all else: people, food, and water!
It is often overlooked that these canines were selectively bred to excel in aquatic environments. For many Labradors, such as the TikTok sensation known as @bustersworld4, their intrinsic penchant for swimming and splashing remains ever-present. Hence, it came as no surprise when Buster’s owner captured him joyously frolicking in a pool amidst a rainstorm! The video from February 15 is as endearing as it is comical, leaving no doubt that Buster was reveling in pure bliss.
Behold the unruffled sovereign! This water-loving dog is living out the quintessential Labrador Retriever fantasy, and he displays no remorse for his carefree antics. From his graceful dives to the way he gazes up into the rain, his regality knows no bounds. As one commenter, @02_princessanne, aptly put it: “he’s starring in a music video.” Indeed, that is precisely the spectacle it evokes!
Amidst the whimsical comparisons of Buster playing the role of a mermaid or perfecting synchronized swimming routines, many likened him to the actor Tom Holland. The resemblance is striking, as in 2018, Holland performed ‘Singing in the Rain’ and ‘Umbrella’ on Lip Sync Battle – the very same song utilized in Buster’s viral video. Once you make the connection, you simply cannot unsee it!
Regardless of what Buster’s aquatic escapades bring to mind, the sheer elation reflected on his countenance as he glides through the pool is undeniable. Clearly, that pool was constructed with him in mind, and if he desires to swim under the downpour, so be it!
Why the Aquatic Affection in Labs?
Labrador Retrievers were purposefully bred to harbor a fondness for water, and their anatomy boasts distinctive features that render them adept at swimming and water-related activities. Firstly, their webbed paws facilitate streamlined movement through water. Secondly, their dual-layered, water-resistant coat ensures insulation and dryness while navigating aquatic realms. Although their outer coat may get wet, the underlying layer remains cozy and airy.
Originally, these faithful companions were bred to retrieve waterfowl for hunters in marshy and wooded terrains. They showcase remarkable agility across diverse landscapes in pursuit of waterfowl, although in modern times, most Labs channel their instincts by retrieving toys from water bodies.
As Buster poignantly reminds us, many dogs exhibit a greater affinity for water than their human counterparts.
