Analytics company Semrush found that, following Quora, Reddit is the second most frequently referenced website in Google AI Overviews.
In a study of the impact of AI on Google Search traffic, Semrush revealed Reddit’s significant presence in Google’s AI summaries. Reddit’s relationship with Google is complex, particularly given that the social media platform is seeking to attract advertisers and become profitable following its IPO last year.
The recent launch of Google’s AI Overviews, which provide concise summaries of search results, has further highlighted Reddit’s prominence as a cited source. Semrush shared data demonstrating Reddit’s popularity in AI-powered searches, attributing this to user engagement and unique content on the platform. The study suggests that Google’s partnership with Reddit, reportedly involving a $60 million agreement for AI model training in 2024, has contributed to Reddit’s increased visibility.
However, despite Reddit’s traffic growth, driven largely by logged-out users arriving via Google Search, analysts have raised concerns about the platform’s reliance on these less valuable visitors. The AI Overview feature has further raised questions about potential decreases in Reddit’s traffic and engagement levels, causing a decline in its stock value.
Representatives from Reddit and Quora declined to comment on the matter when contacted by Business Insider.
