Mia Fishel has made a permanent move from Chelsea to Seattle Reign FC, signing a lucrative long-term contract until 2029. Reports suggest that she will become the highest-paid player in the NWSL, with a total earning potential of $2.5 million throughout the duration of her deal. In comparison, Mallory Swanson’s contract in Chicago was valued at $2 million.
Being affectionately dubbed “Big Fish,” Fishel expressed her enthusiasm for joining Seattle Reign FC, stating, “I’m thrilled to embark on this new chapter in my career in the NWSL. Seattle Reign FC offers a fantastic opportunity, and I’m eager to contribute to the team’s success.”
Originally from San Diego, the 24-year-old forward, a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, was previously selected by the Orlando Pride in the 2022 NWSL Draft but opted to kickstart her professional journey with Tigres UANL in Liga MX Femenil. Despite facing a setback due to a torn ACL during training for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in February 2024, Fishel excelled with Tigres, clinching the Golden Boot and Apertura title in 2022.
Lesle Gallimore, Reign general manager, praised Fishel’s potential, highlighting her goal-scoring ability, creativity, and determination to improve. The club is committed to supporting Fishel’s development and believes she will have a significant impact in the NWSL.
Former Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes oversaw Fishel’s transfer to the English club in 2023, which now receives an undisclosed fee from the Seattle Reign. Additionally, Swanson’s groundbreaking four-year contract with the Red Stars in 2024 set a new standard for player earnings in the NWSL.
As a standout performer in Liga MX Femenil, Fishel scored 17 goals in 17 matches and became the first foreign player to win the Golden Boot. A two-time All-American at UCLA, Fishel brings a wealth of experience and talent to Seattle Reign FC.
Reign coach Laura Harvey expressed her excitement about Fishel’s arrival, emphasizing her exceptional skills and potential to greatly impact the team. Fishel’s knack for disrupting defenses and scoring goals in diverse ways adds a new dimension to the squad, promising an exciting season ahead for the Reign and their fans.
