Rays’ Ace Shane McClanahan Injured Before Opening Day Start!

The Tampa Bay Rays’ starting pitcher, two-time All-Star Shane McClanahan, left his final exhibition start on Saturday due to pain after throwing a pitch. Manager Kevin Cash announced on the game’s radio broadcast that the left-hander had sustained an injury in his triceps area. McClanahan, 27, returned to action after missing all of last season following his second Tommy John surgery in 2023. Despite clocking a 99 mph fastball in his first Grapefruit League appearance, McClanahan experienced discomfort and had to exit the game after facing the 10th Boston Red Sox batter. He will undergo an MRI on Sunday to assess the severity of the injury. Originally slated to be the Rays’ opening day starter, McClanahan’s absence would be a significant blow to the team’s playoff aspirations. The Rays, who brought six starting pitchers to camp, are hopeful for a positive update on McClanahan’s condition as they prepare for their opening game against the Colorado Rockies at Steinbrenner Field.
