Actor Ralph Macchio is open to the idea of a remake of the beloved film “My Cousin Vinny.” In the 1992 original, Macchio portrayed Bill Gambini, the teenage cousin of lawyer Vinny Gambini, played by Joe Pesci.
During PaleyFest, Macchio revealed that discussions have taken place regarding a sequel to the cult classic. When asked about the potential reboot on the red carpet, Macchio shared, “Yeah, I’ve had conversations with other writers about that.” He expressed his appreciation for the film, calling it a “beloved piece” and emphasized the importance of finding a fresh approach.
Should a new version of “My Cousin Vinny” come to fruition, Macchio recognized the significance of involving Pesci in some capacity, even if it means a smaller role than in the original. Macchio humorously suggested that Pesci could participate through FaceTime.
“My Cousin Vinny” tells the story of Vinny, a lawyer with a poor winning record, who assists Bill and his friend Stan after they are accused of murder in a small Alabama town. The film also features Marisa Tomei, who won an Oscar for her role as Mona Lisa Vito.
In addition to “My Cousin Vinny,” Macchio is known for reprising his roles in the “Karate Kid” franchise and its sequel series “Cobra Kai.” He reflected on the emotional finale of “Cobra Kai,” noting the show’s nostalgic ’80s movie feel and fan service elements.
Furthermore, Macchio remembered his late “Karate Kid” co-star, Pat Morita, with whom he shared a special on-screen bond. He believed Morita would have been supportive of the expanded “Karate Kid” universe explored in “Cobra Kai.”
