EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel held a press conference at the end of the two-day EU Leaders' Summit in Brussels.

Ursula von der Leyen responded to a question about whether Orban's meeting with Putin, who is at odds with the EU, in China about two weeks ago was discussed at the summit and how EU leaders reacted to the meeting.

"But what we need is close coordination and transparency if the content of the meeting affects the EU and the unity within the EU," von der Leyen said.

EU reacts to Orban's meeting with Putin
Orban's meeting and handshake with Putin has been criticized by EU members, especially by the Baltic states.

Speaking to reporters during the summit, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said that he would raise the issue at the summit of an EU member state's prime minister meeting with the head of state of Russia, which is at war with Ukraine, which is supported by the EU.

Kallas said he would also discuss the issue with Orban, who shook hands with Putin, whom he described as a "war criminal".

Reacting to Orban's meeting with Putin, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said, "It is really strange to see us flirting with a regime that has committed brutal atrocities in Ukraine. This sends the wrong message to the international community and to Ukraine, which is fighting for its freedoms."

Orban defended his meeting with Putin, saying, "We must do everything for peace. That is why we keep the lines of communication open with the Russians. Otherwise there is no chance for peace."
