Professional Soccer Player Expecting First Child with NFL Athlete

What could be more thrilling than winning a gold medal? United States soccer icon Sophia Wilson made a heartfelt announcement about her pregnancy not long after tying the knot with her college love, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson. Sophia, formerly known as Smith to many fans, made headlines during the Paris Olympics as a standout forward for the U.S. women’s national soccer team. Alongside her teammates Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman, the trio was fondly dubbed “Triple Espresso” for their dynamic play on the field. The Wilsons recently took to Instagram to share the joyous news with a sonogram of their upcoming bundle of joy.

The couple’s social media post exuded happiness as they expressed, “Life just keeps getting sweeter.” Sophia and Michael first crossed paths as freshman student-athletes at Stanford University. Despite Sophia turning pro the following year and Michael continuing his football career, their relationship blossomed. Michael was drafted by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft while Sophia played for the Portland Thorns in Oregon. They managed a long-distance relationship until their marriage in January during the offseason.

The announcement of their pregnancy was met with an outpouring of excitement from fans, friends, and teammates alike. Fellow Stanford alum and U.S. national team star Naomi Girma emotionally commented, “MY HEART,” while Rodman expressed that her “life is complete.” Morgan Weaver, another Thorns forward, eagerly wrote, “OMG YAYYYY! Can’t wait to meet baby Wilson.”

The National Women’s Soccer League recently reached a new collective bargaining agreement with the players union, expanding parental and childcare benefits. Former player Alex Morgan, who retired last year after her second pregnancy, highlighted these enhancements as a source of pride. Morgan emphasized the importance of addressing such issues, stating, “We’re now able to travel with our children and bring our own childcare provider, as well as plan for our families’ future by providing access to fertility clinics and various resources.”

Sophia Wilson is currently in the final year of her contract with the Portland Thorns and would become a free agent upon its expiration. While there are no NWSL teams in Arizona, opportunities exist in San Diego and Denver, where a new team was approved earlier this year.
