Ensuring the long-term commitment of Lawrence Butler was a top priority for the A’s. The Athletics have secured one of their promising young players for an extended period, likely seeing him through to Las Vegas. Outfielder Lawrence Butler has agreed to a seven-year, $66.5 million contract extension, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The deal includes a club option.
This contract secures Butler, a 24-year-old standout, for two of his upcoming free-agent years, with the potential for an additional year based on his development. Following a remarkable season where he posted impressive stats including a .262 batting average, .317 on-base percentage, 22 home runs, and 18 stolen bases, Butler emerged as a key player for the team despite their 69-93 record.
Originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Butler’s success represents a significant achievement in player development for the A’s, especially after a relatively quiet rookie year. Earlier in the offseason, the A’s also locked in another young star, All-Star designated hitter Brent Rooker, with a five-year, $60 million extension.
After a period of relative inactivity, the A’s have surprisingly become one of the more active teams in MLB this offseason. Notable acquisitions include starting pitcher Luis Severino on a three-year, $67 million deal in free agency, as well as deals for third baseman Gio Urshela and starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs.
While these moves may not instantly transform the A’s into contenders, they are positioning the team to elevate their performance and compete at a higher level in the MLB. As the team prepares for a transition to West Sacramento before eventually relocating to Las Vegas in a few years, there is a clear motivation to build a competitive and respected team for the new fan base awaiting them.
