President Donald Trump harshly criticized “60 Minutes” following the airing of stories on Ukraine and Greenland, accusing the CBS newsmagazine of being out of control and calling for consequences for targeting him. Trump expressed his frustration on his Truth Social platform, alleging that “60 Minutes” frequently mentions his name in a negative and defamatory manner, with the latest broadcast exceeding his expectations. He urged FCC Chairman Brendan Carr to impose severe fines and penalties for what he deemed as unlawful behavior. The network did not immediately respond to Trump’s remarks.
Trump is currently embroiled in a $20 billion lawsuit against “60 Minutes” over the editing of an interview with Kamala Harris, which he claims was manipulated to favor her, a claim denied by the newscast. Settlement talks between Trump’s lawyers and CBS’ parent company are reportedly ongoing. The FCC, led by Carr, has initiated a separate investigation into CBS News in connection with this case, as well as others involving major news outlets.
Despite the legal disputes, “60 Minutes” has continued its critical coverage of Trump’s administration, notably through correspondent Scott Pelley. Pelley recently traveled to Ukraine for an interview with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where Zelenskyy expressed strong animosity towards Russian President Vladimir Putin for the invasion of Ukraine and extended an invitation to Trump to visit the country.
Additionally, correspondent Jon Wertheim reported from Greenland on local perspectives regarding Trump’s interest in the region. Trump dismissed “60 Minutes” as a news show, branding it a dishonest political operative disguised as news that must be held accountable for its actions.
