Upon their arrival, deputies found a Land Rover SUV and a Ford Transit van had collided head-on. The driver of the van was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, an 88-year-old passenger in the van, Melvin Joseph Weibel of Dana Point, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Land Rover driver, a 48-year-old woman identified as Serene Francie Rosenberg of Dana Point, was promptly arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. She was booked into Orange County Jail on charges of murder and DUI causing injury. Police revealed that Rosenberg had three prior convictions, although specifics about the nature of those convictions were not disclosed.
