“Today it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take on this challenge,” stated European Union foreign minister Kaja Kallas.
The meeting that took place on Friday had originally aimed to kick-start discussions on a deal regarding Ukraine’s critical minerals. However, it quickly devolved into a confrontation, with President Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticizing Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, accusing him of lacking gratitude.
In a swift response, European leaders rallied behind Zelenskyy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed admiration for Zelenskyy’s dignity, proclaiming, “Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President Zelenskyy. We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace.”
Friedrich Merz, the probable next leader of Germany, emphasized the importance of not confusing the aggressor and the victim in the ongoing conflict.
French President Macron stressed the significance of respecting the Ukrainians who are fighting for their dignity, independence, and the security of Europe.
Zelenskyy stood firm in his insistence that security guarantees must be a part of any agreement to end the war, in addition to the minerals deal put forth by the White House. These guarantees, he argued, were essential to prevent Putin from further aggression, given his history of violating agreements.
President Trump, expressing his discontent with Zelenskyy’s stance, accused him of disrespect and warned against escalating tensions to the point of sparking World War III. Trump later declared that Zelenskyy could return to the negotiating table when he was ready for peace.
Upon leaving the White House, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to America for its support during his visit, emphasizing the importance of working towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
In a subsequent interview on Fox News, Zelenskyy reiterated his appreciation for U.S. support while standing firm in his refusal to apologize for his remarks made at the White House.
Zelenskyy has continuously expressed his gratitude towards the United States for its assistance. Addressing both houses of Congress in December 2022, he began by thanking the American people for their unwavering support and solidarity.
According to the Department of Defense, Congress has allocated approximately $183 billion for Ukraine’s defense since February 2022, although Trump has disputed this figure, claiming that the U.S. has provided aid exceeding $300 billion to Ukraine.
