Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has announced his intention to step down from his position and has urged the U.S. Postal Service to initiate the process of identifying his replacement. Appointed in 2020 during the first Trump administration, DeJoy penned a letter on Monday to the Postal Service Board of Governors, formally requesting the commencement of the search for his successor.
In his letter, DeJoy reflected on his dedication to leading the 640,000 employees of the Postal Service through a period marked by significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, rising inflation, and heightened political tensions. Expressing his pride in the transformative work achieved during his tenure, DeJoy emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth transition that minimizes disruptions for both the Postal Service and the American people.
The official announcement of DeJoy’s decision was made by the federal agency on Tuesday, with the Board of Governors now tasked with identifying a qualified individual to serve as the next Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of the United States Postal Service.
Chairwoman of the Board of Governors, Amber McReynolds, lauded DeJoy’s service and accomplishments, acknowledging his leadership in modernizing the Postal Service and addressing longstanding challenges. DeJoy’s strategic vision included the development of the Delivering for America plan, a comprehensive 10-year initiative aimed at enhancing USPS operations, reducing financial losses, and improving service quality.
The Delivering for America plan outlined ambitious goals, such as investing over $40 billion in capital improvements over the next decade, with a focus on upgrading mail and package processing facilities, expanding the retail and delivery network, and implementing advanced technology solutions.
Prior to his role as Postmaster General, DeJoy built a successful career spanning more than 35 years in the logistics industry, demonstrating his expertise in overseeing complex operations and driving organizational growth.
