The current health status of Pope Francis is concerning as a mysterious illness has resurfaced, putting his well-being at risk. Francis, who underwent surgery to remove part of one of his lungs earlier in life, is now in a critical condition. He is currently receiving high levels of supplemental oxygen and underwent two blood transfusions on Sunday to boost his hemoglobin levels. The medical team attending to him has expressed guarded optimism about his prognosis.
Despite his delicate health situation, the Pope remained alert and responsive on Sunday and even participated in Mass. His doctors have highlighted the fragility of his health due to his age and existing lung issues. They have particularly emphasized the threat of sepsis, a severe blood infection that can develop as a complication of pneumonia.
Today marks the 11th day of Pope Francis’ hospitalization, surpassing the longest period he has spent in the hospital during his papacy, which was 10 days at Gemelli Hospital in 2021 following colon surgery. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, speaking from New York, acknowledged the gravity of the situation by stating that the Catholic community is united in prayer “at the bedside of a dying father,” alluding to the realization that time may be running out, although this has not been officially declared by church authorities in Rome.
