Pope Leo XIV to Revolutionize US Political Agenda with Cardinal Cupic!

Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago stated that the election of Pope Leo XIV aligns with the current political climate, particularly in light of the Trump administration. Cupich emphasized that Pope Leo XIV will address important issues such as immigration, recognizing the struggles of individuals seeking a better life. Additionally, Cupich highlighted Pope Leo XIV’s awareness of challenges in regions like Oceania and Central and South America, where issues like rising sea levels and drug trafficking impact communities. Cupich also noted that Pope Leo XIV, as the first American pope, brings a unique perspective to global matters. The Archbishop discussed the significance of Pope Leo XIV’s multicultural background, having lived in both the United States and Peru, and how this could shape his papacy. Furthermore, Cupich expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV will advocate for social justice and inspire a reevaluation of the church’s mission under his leadership.

I wanted to inquire about the recent open letter from the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, which sheds light on sexual abuse within the church and addresses how Prevost handled allegations before becoming pope. How do you believe he will address the church’s history in this matter?

Cupich: Based on my conversations with him and observing his approach to cases, Prevost is dedicated to the norms set by Pope Francis and genuinely cares about them. He has a track record of meeting with victims, reporting incidents to authorities, conducting investigations, and offering support to survivors. I am confident that he will continue in this direction. His commitment to these principles is evident in everything I have witnessed.

Rev. Peter M. Donohue, president of Villanova University, discussed the significance of Pope Leo XIV during an interview on This Week on May 11, 2025. When asked about the importance of having an American pope, Donohue highlighted how it was previously considered unlikely for American Catholics. Despite initial skepticism due to America’s power, having an American pope like Leo XIV, a native of Chicago, symbolizes a significant shift. While Leo has deep connections to America, his global and international experiences in Peru and Rome have shaped his worldview beyond his American roots.

Cardinal Cupich believes that Pope Leo XIV will both enhance and complement the political agenda of the United States.
