Police in a city in southwestern Colorado have found that capturing loose kangaroos has become a regular part of their duties.
Last autumn, Irwin, a young pet kangaroo, was easily recaptured in Durango after escaping by jumping into a bag that resembled his mother’s pouch. However, when Irwin escaped again on Monday, the officers faced a new challenge as he had now outgrown the bag. Fortunately, Officer Shane Garrison, who has experience handling animals, was able to successfully corner and capture Irwin near a house and transport him back to safety in a police truck. It is legal to keep kangaroos as pets in Colorado, and Irwin was returned to his family in downtown Durango. As Irwin continues to grow, capturing him will become increasingly difficult as adult kangaroos can reach impressive sizes and possess powerful kicking abilities. The police commander emphasised the importance of responsible pet ownership to ensure the safety and well-being of both the animals and the community.
