The individual accused of starting a fire at the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion revealed to law enforcement his intention to use a hammer in an attack against Gov. Josh Shapiro. Cody Balmer voluntarily turned himself in to authorities, admitting to climbing over a fence outside the governor’s home and throwing homemade Molotov cocktails inside while Shapiro and his family were asleep. Surveillance footage captured Balmer entering the mansion, setting off an incendiary device in the dining room, and departing the premises. Following a report from Balmer’s ex-girlfriend, he surrendered at the police station. The FBI is aiding local officials in investigating the incident, though a motive has not been disclosed. Shapiro, having observed Passover with his family at the time of the attack, emphasized the unacceptable nature of such violence and noted the prevalence of similar incidents in society. Balmer is anticipated to face charges including attempted murder, terrorism, and attempted arson.
