Pecan Ball Pittsburgh’s Mouthwatering Delight!

For every famous city around the world, there are equally famous dishes that come to mind. Think of Paris and you’ll imagine flaky croissants and beautiful baguettes. Fresh sushi from Tokyo’s top spots is worth a journey across the globe. New York brings visions of the perfect slice of pizza. Close to my hometown upstate, you can savor Chicken Riggies and Utica Greens. Pittsburgh, known for its bridges and beloved Steelers, also has a rich food history that I’ve enjoyed discovering over time.

One of the city’s iconic foods is the pierogi, thanks to the large Eastern European immigrant population. Residents have their favorite spots to indulge in these comforting potato-filled dumplings. Another must-try is the famous sandwich from Primanti Bros., packed with coleslaw, fries, meat, cheese, and more. Don’t forget the Pittsburgh salad, topped with fries, and the Burnt Almond Torte from Prantl’s Bakery—an exquisite cake with custard filling and toasted almonds.

But delving deeper, you’ll uncover one of Pittsburgh’s hidden culinary treasures, my personal favorite: the Pecan Ball. This dessert, somewhat unique to Pittsburgh, consists of vanilla ice cream rolled in chopped pecans and drizzled with chocolate and/or caramel sauce. Simple yet renowned, many restaurants in the city still offer their own version today.

The Pecan Ball is credited to James Blandi Sr., owner of LeMont restaurant atop Mt. Washington, with a stunning view of the Point since 1960. It’s also been a staple at old-school Italian restaurants like Rico’s, Tambellini’s, and the Tic Toc. Pittsburghers remain loyal and nostalgic to these beloved dishes.

Originally from the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan, the Pecan Ball has been a favorite since the 1940s. You don’t have to travel to Pittsburgh to enjoy this treat; making it at home is simple. Start with excellent vanilla ice cream and quality pecans for a delightful nutty flavor. Toast the pecans, chop them finely, roll them onto the ice cream balls, and freeze until ready to serve.

Enjoy this delicious and nostalgic dessert wherever you are, and perhaps consider exploring Pittsburgh’s diverse culinary offerings when you get the chance!

With the pecan balls already prepared and awaiting in the freezer, you have the freedom to choose what other delectable accompaniments to serve alongside them. Traditionally, these delightful treats are enjoyed with a drizzle of hot fudge or butterscotch, perhaps crowned with a dollop of freshly whipped cream. For a quick and easy preparation, you can opt to make your own hot fudge or caramel sauces from scratch, or simply pick up your preferred store-bought varieties for added convenience. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not get creative and customize the ice cream nestled within the pecan balls as well?

One of the most appealing aspects of these pecan balls is their versatility and make-ahead nature. By storing them in the freezer, tightly wrapped in plastic wrap and foil to keep freezer burn at bay, you can effortlessly retrieve them at a moment’s notice to impress your guests at your next dinner party, holiday gathering, or simply for a special indulgence. The combination of the cold, creamy ice cream encased in crunchy nuts and luscious sauce is sure to captivate your taste buds and leave you craving more. These pecan balls offer a seamless blend of simplicity and nostalgia, providing a taste of home with a rich, storied history to savor.
