Party Grotto Paradise in Colorful Bahamas Home!

Uncover the Hidden Party Hideaway in Paradise
“Please note that some links may earn Hearst Magazines and Yahoo commission or revenue.” Let’s start by clarifying that Tivoli was not my brainchild. It was conceived in 1992 by an esteemed client, a talented architect, and a skilled designer. The client, a stylish and affluent Spanish woman, collaborated with the late Henry Melich, a renowned architect, and Imogen Taylor from Colefax and Fowler, a highly regarded designer. The grandeur and intricate interiors of the house caused quite a stir in Lyford upon its completion. Speculations regarding the extravagant cost of the interior decoration were rife back then. The Spanish lady had a fondness for extravagant dinners and social gatherings, and an invitation to her events was highly coveted.

Fast forward to the late 1990s, the original owner no longer frequented the house, leaving it in a state of neglect. A few loyal staff members remained, maintaining the property until a new family with a passion for beauty and elegance set their sights on acquiring the house. After purchasing the property, they embarked on its restoration journey, seeking to breathe new life into the once magnificent residence. This is where my involvement began.

Despite years of neglect, with no electricity or water for a decade and a family of raccoons taking up residence, the house was surprisingly well-preserved. Minimal water damage and intact windows, doors, and hardwood floors were a testament to its sturdy construction. Delicate restoration work was carried out, including refurbishing the drawing room walls and repairing the tattered curtains. Upholstery fabrics were replaced, bedrooms were revamped with new furnishings, and the dining room was adorned with exquisite sterling-silver shell chandeliers.

Architect Kiko Sanchez redesigned the back-of-house areas, transforming them into a harmonious new kitchen that seamlessly blends with the original structure. The once-used wine cellar was repurposed into a late-night party haven akin to Annabel’s in London, now known as the “dungeon.” This transformation marked a new chapter in the history of this iconic residence.

The formal front facade of Tivoli, with its palm tree-lined motor court, offers a glimpse of the opulence within. The formal living room, library, and dining room were revitalized, preserving the essence of the original design while infusing a fresh perspective. Original features like the striate wall panels and Fortuny silk wallcovering were meticulously restored and enhanced with contemporary elements, such as silver-leaf wallpaper and unique chandeliers.

With a blend of restoration and modernization, Tivoli now stands as a testament to timeless elegance and sophisticated design, ready to welcome a new chapter of stories within its walls.

The original service rooms located at the back of the house were completely demolished. Together with architect Kiko Sanchez, we embarked on the task of designing a new and improved kitchen that seamlessly blends in with the existing aesthetic of the property. The new layout of interconnected rooms begins with the elegant china room, featuring a striking Soane Britain brass bar cart positioned at its center. Transitioning into the kitchen area, you will find a bespoke circular island and accompanying benches crafted by the talented artisans at Raj Company.

The original primary suite boasted magnificent hand-painted floors that harmonized beautifully with the timeless Fornasetti furniture pieces. We undertook a meticulous renovation of the space, refreshing the floors, walls, and upholstery to breathe new life into this cherished area. Completing the look, a captivating frieze of Cole and Sons’ Fornasetti-inspired wallpaper now adorns the striated walls just below the ornate crown molding.

Nestled beneath a stunning groin-vaulted ceiling lies the newly designed party room, affectionately referred to as the “dungeon” by locals. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Annabel’s and 5 Hertford Street in London, this space exudes an air of sophistication and mystery, perfect for hosting memorable gatherings.

The original rattan chaises in the courtyard received a loving restoration by Abilities Unlimited in Nassau. Adorned in Quadrille’s TurtleBatik fabric, these timeless pieces now offer a cozy spot for relaxation and contemplation. Jamb in London provided the elegant new sconces that illuminate the courtyard, adding a touch of charm to the outdoor oasis.

Surrounding the long, mosaic-lined pool are the sleek and modern McKinnon and Harris chaises, inviting you to unwind and soak up the sun in style. The perfect setting for leisurely afternoons or lively gatherings, the pool area epitomizes luxury and relaxation.
