PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — San Diego Padres pitcher Matt Waldron suffered a minor oblique strain while warming up ahead of a spring training game on Friday against the Texas Rangers. Waldron, expected to pitch in the game, may now miss the beginning of the season.
Padres manager Mike Shildt stated, “Oblique injuries can take some time to heal. We will reassess the situation, but he will require a period of rest, the length of which is yet to be determined.”
Waldron, 28, posted a 7-11 record with a 4.91 ERA in 27 outings (26 starts) for the Padres last season. He is in contention for the final spot in the starting rotation. Waldron was originally drafted by Cleveland in the 18th round of the 2019 draft from the University of Nebraska.
