CLEVELAND (AP) — Lawrence J. Dolan, who had been the owner of Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team since 2000, has passed away at the age of 94. The Cleveland Guardians announced his death on Monday, citing natural causes as the reason for his passing.
In a statement released by the team, Bob DiBiasio, the Guardians’ senior vice president of public affairs, expressed heartfelt words about Mr. Dolan’s significant impact on the Greater Cleveland community. DiBiasio highlighted Dolan’s extensive contributions, ranging from his service as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marines to his philanthropic endeavors, legal career, business ventures, involvement in education, and his passion for sports, particularly within the realm of baseball.
A proud Cleveland native, Dolan acquired the team from Richard Jacobs for $320 million in 2000. The Dolan family, who holds a 75% stake in the club, has upheld the position of the longest-tenured ownership group in the history of Cleveland’s sports franchises.
Following Lawrence Dolan’s passing, his son, Paul Dolan, assumed the role of primary control person for the team in 2013. Paul Dolan expressed deep sorrow at the loss of his father while also emphasizing the privilege of having had him as an integral part of their lives. He described Lawrence Dolan as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was dedicated to his family, work, community, and unwavering support for local sports teams, including his ownership of the Cleveland Guardians.
Formerly known as the Cleveland Indians, the team was rebranded as the Guardians after the conclusion of the 2021 season. Throughout the past 24 seasons, Cleveland has achieved notable success, securing seven American League Central Division titles, making nine postseason appearances, and reaching the 2016 World Series, where they faced the Chicago Cubs in a thrilling seven-game series. Additionally, Cleveland had the honor of hosting the 2019 All-Star Game.
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred shared his condolences, praising Larry Dolan’s commitment to mentoring youth and his dedication to using the Guardians as a platform to make a positive impact on the Greater Cleveland region. Manfred also acknowledged Dolan’s professional contributions to the Major League Executive Council and the Ownership Committee, as well as his involvement in labor negotiation efforts within the league.
Survived by his wife, Eva, six children, and 21 grandchildren, Lawrence Dolan leaves behind a lasting legacy. Notably, his nephew, James Dolan, possesses ownership of the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, and the iconic Madison Square Garden.
