MIAMI (AP) — In a groundbreaking move, the NHL is bringing hockey outdoors to Florida next season — not once, but twice. On Wednesday, the NHL announced that the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers will host the New York Rangers at loanDepot Park in Miami, home of the Marlins, on Jan. 2, 2026, for the Winter Classic. Additionally, the Tampa Bay Lightning will host the Boston Bruins at Raymond James Stadium on Feb. 1, 2026, for a Stadium Series game.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman acknowledged the growth of hockey in the Sunshine State, citing the success of the Panthers and Lightning in recent years. Both teams have been eager to host outdoor games, and the league has finally granted their wish.
The matchups against the Rangers and Bruins, two Original Six teams, promise to be exciting for fans. Panthers President Matthew Caldwell expressed his enthusiasm for finally having an outdoor game in Florida, while Lightning CEO Steve Griggs hailed the event as a significant moment for the Tampa Bay community.
These outdoor games will be unique, given Florida’s warm climate. To overcome this challenge, loanDepot Park will utilize its retractable roof for the Panthers-Rangers game, while Raymond James Stadium will have a temporary roof installed over the ice for the Lightning-Bruins matchup.
The NHL’s president of content and events, Steve Mayer, sees the outdoor games in Florida as an opportunity to showcase the sport in a new setting. Despite the weather risks, the league is determined to create a winter wonderland experience for fans in the Sunshine State.
The 2026 games will mark the 44th and 45th regular-season outdoor contests in NHL history. The Rangers and Bruins have strong records in outdoor games, while the Lightning will have their second outdoor appearance. The Panthers are set to make their outdoor game debut, further expanding the sport’s presence in Florida.
