Edmonton Oilers’ star captain Connor McDavid will have an MRI on Friday following a lower-body injury he sustained in the second period of a 4-3 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets. The injury occurred when McDavid was bumped by Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey while chasing the puck in the Jets’ zone. McDavid did not return for the third period and overtime, and the severity of his injury was not immediately known.
Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed that McDavid, along with Leon Draisaitl who is dealing with an undisclosed injury, will miss Saturday’s game against the Seattle Kraken. The Oilers were already without Draisaitl in the previous game and also saw goaltender Stuart Skinner leave in the third period due to a collision with Jets forward Gabriel Vilardi.
Forward Zach Hyman described the game as “unorthodox” due to the injuries to key players. McDavid, 28, extended his point streak to 13 games with an assist on Jeff Skinner’s goal, bringing his total to 90 points this season. In the previous season, McDavid led the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Final and was named the Conn Smythe Trophy recipient as the playoff MVP.
McDavid, a five-time Art Ross Trophy winner, has accumulated over 1,000 points in his career since being drafted first overall in 2015. Draisaitl, who is day-to-day, leads the league with 49 goals this season and has totaled 101 points. Skinner has a 23-17-4 record with the Oilers this season.
