Ohio Woman Eaten by Neighbor’s Pigs on Christmas Day!

An Ohio woman, identified as Rebecca Westergaard Rigney, 75, was tragically mauled to death and partially consumed by two pigs near her residence on Christmas Day. The distressing incident took place on Mink Street in Pataskala, as reported by The Columbus Dispatch and CBS affiliate WBNS.

Ms. Westergaard Rigney was discovered deceased with severe leg injuries on the front steps of her home by law enforcement officers who responded to the scene following the pig attack on December 25, 2024. Initially, police had been alerted to her absence from a family gathering at her niece’s residence in Norton, Ohio, prompting a welfare check at her property in Pataskala, according to a report from the Pataskala Police obtained by news outlets.

Upon entering the residence around 3 p.m., authorities encountered a large pig inside the home. Reports from WBNS indicated that it was believed the victim had been assaulted by two pigs that were wandering in the vicinity of the property. These pigs were identified as belonging to a neighbor of Ms. Westergaard Rigney. Additionally, police discovered at least two other pigs at the neighbor’s residence, further adding to the investigation, as outlined by WBNS.

The cause of Ms. Westergaard Rigney’s demise was determined to be exsanguination due to extensive superficial injuries inflicted by livestock animals. The Licking County Coroner’s Office, as cited by WBNS, ruled her death as accidental, noting also that she had preexisting health conditions.

Authorities informed the owner of the pigs that the animals would be placed under quarantine until further notice, in light of the tragic incident. Notably, the neighbor responsible for the pigs has not faced criminal charges, as reported by The Dispatch.

Pataskala Police Chief Bruce Brooks expressed his shock and sorrow over the unsettling turn of events, labeling it a “horrible, horrible situation.” He highlighted the rarity of dealing with farm animals in such a context, drawing attention to the complexities involved in investigating an incident of this nature.
