In Lower Hutt, New Zealand, work was started at the wastewater plant against the 'bad odor' problem that has been affecting for weeks.

Officials trying to solve the problem ahead of the music festival planned to be held in the city on January 5 spoke about the 'poop' debate that erupted when the issue was brought to the city council.

The mayor was forced to make a statement on the issue after an advisor from the Hutt City Council, which met in recent weeks, said that local residents 'should not poop' in order to solve the problem.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry said the consultant's advice was 'in jest' and that 'the potential increase in sewage contributions will not make a difference to the odor problem'.

The companies operating the 'Seaview' wastewater plant have also been fined for the odor emitted from the plant. According to The Guardian, Wellington Water and Veolia New Zealand were ordered to pay a fine of around 22 thousand dollars.

'LIKE BEING SLAPPED IN THE FACE WITH A DIAPER'

"It's such a strong smell that you feel like you're being slapped in the face with a wet used diaper," said Josh Boyce, who lives in Lower Hutt. "It's like your friend farting in the car with the windows open," said Alan Burgess.
