Authorities in Long Island, New York are currently investigating whether any of the wildfires that occurred over the weekend may have been deliberately set. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina reported that 25 detectives are actively working to determine the source of the wind-driven brush fires. The investigation involves the use of drones, helicopters, and a thorough review of all individuals who contacted 911 regarding the blazes.
Commissioner Catalina emphasized their commitment to uncovering the truth, stating, “We’re going to get to the bottom of what happened.” He mentioned that investigators are aiming to determine if there was any malicious intent behind the fires in the coming days. Over the weekend, a total of four wildfires erupted, scorching approximately 600 acres of land. By Sunday evening, the largest fire in the Pine Barrens area was fully contained, with other blazes also brought under control.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency and implemented a burn ban for Long Island following the incidents. Two firefighters sustained injuries while battling the fires, including one firefighter who suffered facial burns. Meanwhile, in South Carolina, authorities arrested a woman named Alexandra Bialousow for allegedly starting a fire near Myrtle Beach through negligent burning practices on her property.
As investigations continue, red flag warnings are active in various parts of the central U.S., indicating a high risk of wildfires due to factors such as strong winds, elevated temperatures, and dry conditions. The National Weather Service has cautioned against activities that could potentially spark wildfires in these vulnerable areas, urging the public to exercise caution.
