Nutritionists’ Outrage Red Food Dye Ban Delayed Too Long!

Los Angeles-based registered dietitian nutritionist, Ilana Muhlstein, expressed her excitement over the FDA’s recent decision to ban a synthetic dye that has been present in candy, cereals, and strawberry-flavored drinks for far too long. She noted that this move comes more than three decades after the same dye was prohibited in cosmetics due to evidence linking it to cancer in animals. Muhlstein emphasized the persistent efforts of consumer advocacy groups and researchers who have long advocated for this change, citing not only cancer risks but also potential links to hyperactivity and ADHD in children.

Certified holistic nutritionist, Robin DeCicco, based in New York, also welcomed the ban on red dye No. 3, highlighting the inconsistency in its presence in food products despite being removed from cosmetics years ago. Both Muhlstein and DeCicco underscored the importance of staying informed about the ingredients in the food we consume and recommended seeking natural alternatives to artificial dyes. They mentioned the prevalence of red dye No. 3 in various products marketed towards children and urged consumers to prioritize high-quality ingredients in their food choices.

The nutritionists suggested using natural substitutes like pomegranate juice or fruit powder to maintain the fun aspect of colored foods while avoiding synthetic dyes. DeCicco shared her experience working with families of children with ADHD, noting improvements in symptoms upon removing sugar and artificial additives from their diets. They concluded by encouraging readers to be mindful of ingredient labels and opt for healthier alternatives to artificial food coloring.

The batter can attain a natural red hue by incorporating crushed-up, freeze-dried strawberries into white frosting or whipped cream. In addition to this method, alternatives such as beetroot powder, hibiscus powder, and mashed raspberries can also be used, as suggested. Melissa Rudy of Fox News Digital contributed to this report.
