London (AP) – Novak Djokovic and coach Andy Murray have decided to part ways just ahead of the French Open, following a disappointing start to the clay-court season. Murray’s representatives confirmed on Tuesday that the two former No. 1-ranked players will no longer be collaborating.
Expressing gratitude, Murray stated, “Thanks to Novak for the incredible opportunity to work together and to his team for their dedication over the past six months. I wish Novak all the best for the remainder of the season.” Djokovic, having lost his opening matches in the last two tournaments in Monte Carlo and Madrid, acknowledged Murray’s contribution on social media, thanking him for the hard work, enjoyment, and support on and off the court, and appreciating the deepening friendship during their time together.
The unexpected pairing of Djokovic and Murray came ahead of the Australian Open, with Djokovic extending the coaching offer to Murray following the latter’s retirement last year. Initially intended for an indefinite period and to include participation in some clay-court tournaments this season, the collaboration did not yield the desired results for Djokovic, who is yet to secure a tournament win this season after facing setbacks in the Australian Open and the Miami final, falling one title shy of his 100th career victory.
