An attorney representing Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, argued that the 26-year-old is being denied a fair trial.
These comments were made during a brief procedural hearing on Friday, which saw hundreds of supporters – some traveling from as far as Kansas – chanting the defendant’s name and sporting shirts with his image.
Mr. Mangione appeared in court wearing a green sweater and a bulletproof vest, with his hands and legs shackled. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges in New York.

However, Judge Gregory Carro ruled that Mr. Mangione should remain shackled based on court security’s recommendation.
Ms. Agnifilo also criticized Mr. Mangione’s continued detention in federal custody, citing difficulties in meeting with his lawyers to prepare for court appearances.
Prosecutors informed Judge Carro that Mr. Mangione’s federal detention was agreed upon with the defense team.
Ms. Agnifilo retorted, “When faced with the death penalty, you have no choice but to agree.”
She mentioned that prosecutors were still deliberating on whether her client would face capital punishment.
Additionally, Mr. Mangione’s lawyer raised concerns about the New York City detective and Mayor Eric Adams discussing case evidence with HBO before it was disclosed to the defense team.
