Nick Jonas felt nervous yet excited on the opening night of his new musical “The Last Five Years” in New York City on April 6, 2025. In an interview with PEOPLE, the 32-year-old star shared his feelings of being intimidated performing in a Broadway show but emphasized the importance of taking risks and putting oneself out there as an artist and actor.
Starring opposite Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren in Jason Robert Brown’s two-person musical, Nick acknowledged his stage fright despite his extensive experience performing as a singer worldwide. He admitted feeling pressure performing for theater enthusiasts who have a deep connection to the show.
Despite his nerves, Nick expressed his love for storytelling and the opportunity to challenge himself as an actor. He highlighted the gratifying experience of showcasing vulnerability and taking bold creative risks in front of audiences.
In “The Last Five Years,” which marks its first Broadway production, Nick portrays the character Jamie Wellerstein alongside Adrienne Warren’s Cathy Hiatt. The musical explores their relationship from different perspectives and timelines.
Nick praised Warren’s performance, particularly her rendition of the song “Summer in Ohio,” noting her humor and soulfulness in delivering the vocals. He also shared his enjoyment of singing the song “A Miracle Would Happen” as a relatable and fun aspect of his character’s journey.
Leading up to the opening night, Nick developed a routine of walking to the theater daily and interacting with fans along the way. Joined by his wife Priyanka Chopra and brothers Joe, Kevin, and Frankie on the red carpet, Nick expressed gratitude for the supportive fan base and shared his excitement for the show’s debut.
“It’s a great confidence boost before a show,” he shares with PEOPLE. “Meeting people on the street is nice. Most people are friendly.”
“And it’s especially nice when they don’t mistake me for Joe or Kevin,” he jokes, referring to his brothers, who are also part of the Jonas Brothers group.
Nick also mentions how his Broadway stint in The Last Five Years, running until June 22, has allowed him to take a break from his usual busy travel schedule and spend quality time with his family in New York City. He and his wife, Priyanka Chopra, 42, have a 3-year-old daughter named Malti Marie.
“[Malti] loves being in New York, and this family time has been wonderful,” he tells PEOPLE. “We’re used to being in different cities every day, so being in one place together has been really nice.”
“We’ve been exploring and keeping [Malti] active and occupied. We’re both busy parents, but we’re making time to connect as a family amid our hectic schedules, and it’s been lovely,” he adds.
