NHL GMs Cracking Down on Goaltender Interference and Coach Challenges!

At the NHL general managers’ annual spring meeting in Manalapan, Florida, video review, particularly coach’s challenges for goaltender interference, was a key topic of discussion on Monday. The GMs reviewed approximately 70 clips of challenged goals from this season, focusing on interference, offside, or missed stoppage instances like puck hitting the protective netting, a hand pass, or a high stick. The goal was to clarify the league’s standards for goalie interference and to provide all 32 organizations with a better understanding of the review process.

Goalie interference challenges have reached a peak this season, with 105 challenges in 1,048 games, and 60 of the calls successfully overturned – the highest percentage since the system was implemented six seasons ago. As the regular season nears its end and the playoffs approach, with tight races for playoff spots, close attention is being paid to all aspects of video review.
