NFL Fine for Joe Mixon’s Comments on Officiating Disappears Following Appeal

The National Football League has decided to revoke a $25,000 fine that was imposed on Joe Mixon of the Houston Texans for his remarks regarding the officiating in the team’s playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. This decision came after the running back appealed the fine. Mixon had initially been penalized for comments he made following the Texans’ 23-14 defeat, during which Houston’s defense incurred penalties for hits on quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Appeals officer Chris Palmer, in a letter to Mixon obtained by ESPN.com, stated that during the hearing process on January 30, it was determined that Mixon did not overtly criticize the officials in a public manner. Mixon’s response to a question about the officiating after the game was along the lines of, “everybody knows how it is playing up here.” He emphasized the importance of not relying solely on the referees’ decisions and acknowledged the scrutiny faced by officials.

Palmer emphasized in his correspondence with Mixon that upholding the integrity of the game and respecting the officials is a shared responsibility among all NFL stakeholders. Mixon was commended for clarifying his remarks during the appeal process and recognizing the potential impact of public criticism on officials, given his influential platform as a player.

The initial confusion surrounding the fine stemmed from a comment made by former Cincinnati receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, which was mistakenly attributed to Mixon in a Sports Illustrated article. Following the correction of this error, the NFL reissued the fine for the comments that Mixon actually made. Sports Illustrated rectified the attribution mistake regarding the comment made by Houshmandzadeh.
