New Initiative Takes Steps to Protect Victims

In a new initiative, a police force is implementing a protocol where follow-up visits will be conducted to victims of domestic abuse within 24 hours of a suspect’s arrest as part of a trial. Avon and Somerset Police have announced that during these visits, victims will be provided with “potentially lifesaving support,” which includes access to emergency accommodation and wellbeing services. Additionally, victims will have the opportunity to share “critical information” regarding the perpetrators of the abuse.

The trial, named Operation Balearic, is set to commence on 10 February with the collaboration of the charity The You Trust and Somerset Council. Detective Inspector Matt Cable, from Avon and Somerset Police’s sexual investigations team, emphasized the importance of prompt engagement with victims following traumatic incidents. He stated, “By following up within 24 hours, with the support of specialist advisers, we provide them with a second chance to seek help – showing them that they are heard, supported, and protected.”

Furthermore, Det Insp Cable highlighted the significance of empowering victims to share crucial information that could aid in building stronger cases against dangerous perpetrators. A previous one-month trial conducted by the force involved visits to 49 victims, with 42% providing additional evidence to officers and 81% engaging with further safeguarding support.

Natalie Mears, representing The You Trust, expressed, “No-one should have to live in fear of abuse or violence. This is an incredibly frightening time for victims, and we stand by them to ensure they are not alone.”
