New Extreme Weather Alert Tool for Grand Canyon Adventurers!

A new extreme weather alert system is now available to adventurers in Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. The Grand Canyon River Alert System has been upgraded to send satellite-based warnings to subscribers, allowing individuals with capable devices to receive alerts even in areas without cellphone service within the park’s vast 1.2 million acres. This system provides crucial information about flash floods, debris flows, and boating hazards that were previously inaccessible to backcountry visitors. The alerts, issued by the National Weather Service or Park Service, give visitors advance notice of impending weather events so they can take appropriate action to stay safe.

Flash flooding is a significant concern at the park, particularly during the late summer months when seasonal monsoons bring thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. These sudden rainstorms can trigger dangerous conditions, such as rockslides and mudflows, posing risks to visitors. The new alert system aims to address this by providing timely warnings to help prevent injuries and fatalities.

Visitors can sign up for this free service by texting GCRIVERALERTS to 928-707-7842 and will receive a confirmation message upon subscription. While the alert system enhances public safety, park staff stress that it should supplement, not replace, personal awareness and preparedness. Superintendent Ed Keable emphasizes the importance of personal readiness in remote areas, underscoring the role of the alert system as a valuable communication tool for backcountry users.

Although designed for Grand Canyon National Park, officials believe this alert system could serve as a model for other extensive parks nationwide. The National Park Service anticipates that over a million annual backcountry visitors in the Desert Southwest could benefit from this service.
