Mystery Surrounds Dominant Figure in Film Nominations

The Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs) are fast approaching, with members of the rap group Kneecap vying for a major honor alongside Hollywood superstar Cillian Murphy. An Irish-language film depicting the group has garnered an impressive 17 award nominations. The three members of Kneecap are each up for the lead actor in a film category.
Among the nominees for Best Film are Kathleen Is Here, King Frankie, Kneecap, Small Things Like These, Spilt Milk, and The Apprentice. The film about Kneecap, based on a semi-fictionalized account of the rap trio’s origins, is nominated across multiple categories such as Best Film, Best Director, and Best Script.
In a previous triumph, the film clinched seven British Independent Film Awards, including the prestigious Best British Independent Film accolade. The three band members, Naoise Ó Cairealláin (Móglaí Bap), JJ Ó Dochartaigh (DJ Próvaí), and Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh (Mo Chara), are all contenders for the lead actor in a film category.
Also in the running for this category are Peter Coonan for King Frankie, Paul Mescal for Gladiator II, and Cillian Murphy for Small Things Like These. Murphy, a previous IFTA and Oscar winner for his role in Oppenheimer, is nominated for his performance in the adaptation of Claire Keegan’s novella.
The drama category features nominees like Anthony Boyle (Say Nothing), Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Michael Fassbender (The Agency), Ciarán Hinds (The Dry), Andrew Scott (Ripley), and Aidan Turner (Rivals).
Veteran actor Colm Meaney will be honored with the IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award. IFTA highlighted that this year’s nominees showcase Ireland’s exceptional storytelling on a global platform.
Disney’s drama Say Nothing, based on a book by Patrick Radden Keefe, has received 10 nominations. The series delves into the lives of individuals in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, featuring performances by Lola Petticrew and Hazel Doupe as IRA members Dolours and Marian Price.
One of the series’ narratives focuses on Jean McConville, one of the “disappeared” victims of the conflict. Northern Ireland-based productions like Blue Lights and Crá have also secured nominations for their contributions to the drama category.
In the lead actress in a film category, Saoirse Ronan’s portrayal in The Outrun has garnered recognition, along with other talented actresses like Carolyn Bracken, Jessie Buckley, Hazel Doupe, Eileen Walsh, and Alisha Weir for their respective roles.
