“It has been observed that pasteurization effectively eliminates the virus, hence, the usual pasteurized milk found on grocery store shelves is considered safe,” stated Cennimo. “Therefore, there is no need for concern when purchasing such milk.” On the other hand, unpasteurized milk, commonly known as raw milk, poses potential risks. The FDA has previously cautioned against the consumption of raw milk, as it does not undergo pasteurization. The agency currently deems the consumption of unpasteurized milk and milk products as a “high-risk choice.”
“With the avian influenza virus currently circulating among dairy cattle in the United States, raw milk contains a significantly high concentration of this virus,” explained Martin. “Several cases have been documented of animals falling ill and even dying from consuming this contaminated milk.”
Martin expressed uncertainty regarding whether humans have fallen ill from drinking contaminated raw milk. Notably, there is no established intervention strategy to mitigate the virus in raw dairy products without the process of pasteurization.
Does freezing eggs or milk effectively eradicate bird flu? According to experts, freezing is ineffective in eliminating the bird flu virus. Many pathogens, including H5N1, can survive at low or freezing temperatures.
Cennimo provided an analogy, likening the situation to receiving health advice when traveling to a foreign country. “One often receives advice not to consume water in certain countries,” he explained. “Similarly, when advised against drinking water with ice, it highlights how even ice cubes can harbor bacteria from local water sources. Therefore, freezing meat, eggs, or other products may not deactivate influenza.”
