A police officer was tragically killed while responding to a shooting at a hospital in York, Pennsylvania, on a Saturday morning. The department confirmed this sad news on Facebook. Additionally, the gunman involved in the incident was also killed, as stated by UPMC Memorial in a Facebook post.
Susan Manko, spokesperson for UPMC Memorial in York, reassured the public that no patients were harmed in the incident, and the hospital is now under secure conditions. Ted Czech, a public information officer at York County’s Office of Emergency Management, mentioned to CNN that the threat has been neutralized, and an investigation is currently in progress.
Law enforcement officials are present at the scene, with Manko ensuring that families of patients arriving at the hospital are being directed to the parking lot of a nearby building. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, having been informed about the tragic shooting, expressed his intention to visit the location. In a statement released on X, he mentioned the hospital’s security status and the collaborative efforts of the Pennsylvania State Police and Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, along with local and federal partners.
Shapiro urged the public to heed the instructions of local authorities and to avoid the area for safety reasons. State Senator Dawn Keefer and State Representative Seth Grove offered their prayers for the injured and affected individuals, condemning the act of violence. They appreciated the swift response of first responders in securing the scene, providing medical aid, and ensuring community safety.
UPMC Memorial, a 104-bed hospital established in August 2019, offers a range of medical services including emergency care, cardiology, chronic disease management, and surgical procedures. York, located in southern Pennsylvania, is the setting for this unfortunate incident.
