Mysterious earthquake rattles Caribbean with tsunami scare

Shortly after the unsettling earthquake, the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center released a tsunami advisory for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the British Virgin Islands. Subsequently, this advisory was later canceled for these specific islands. The warning center also alerted about what it characterized as a “tsunami threat” looming over Cuba, Honduras, and the Cayman Islands. Nonetheless, it was disclosed later on Saturday night that, based on “the latest modeling and information,” the region was no longer under a tsunami threat.

No alerts were issued for the continental United States during this period of uncertainty that ensued following the earthquake. Local authorities in the Cayman Islands and Puerto Rico acted swiftly to caution residents against venturing into the water. Providing guidance, Puerto Rico Seismic Network director Ángel Vázquez emphasized, “Although a high impact event is not anticipated, as a safety measure no one should be in the water until further notice. It is important to follow official information and avoid the spread of rumors.”

There have been no reports of physical damage stemming from the earthquake itself, relayed the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service to CBS News. As of late Saturday night, a minimum of 326 individuals reported feeling the earthquake to the U.S. Geological Survey.

In parallel news stories, efforts are underway to locate a missing plane off the coast of Alaska with 10 individuals on board, while speculation is rife on the potential financial gains for the NBA’s Pat Riley if the Kansas City Chiefs secure a Super Bowl victory. Meanwhile, a community is rallying to preserve a prominent habitat for polar bears, highlighting the ongoing environmental struggles faced in the region.
