Mothers Day Miracle Farewell to Frequent Rain Thunderstorms in Northeast!

Great news for the northeastern United States this Sunday as the Mother’s Day forecast shines bright on the weather maps. However, AccuWeather meteorologists caution that there may be some showers to navigate before then. A persistent storm system has been bringing rounds of rain and thunderstorms to the region earlier this week.

Over a 48-hour period ending at 9 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, the storm dumped nearly 3 inches of rain on Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, while Westhampton Beach, New York, received 2.51 inches, and Oxford, Connecticut, saw 3.24 inches. The system also triggered severe weather, including a tornado sighting in eastern Pennsylvania on Tuesday.

By Wednesday, the storm was moving out towards New England and southeastern Canada, resulting in widespread showers and sporadic thunderstorms in New England through the evening. As this old storm departed, a new storm formed over the Ohio Valley and the eastern Great Lakes, spreading rain across the Northeast.

Looking ahead, a general 1-2 inches of rain is expected across the Northeast through the weekend, with some areas likely seeing 2-4 inches of rainfall, especially from eastern Pennsylvania to central New England. The maximum predicted rainfall in this zone is 5 inches.

Despite the wet conditions from recent days, the upcoming storm is anticipated to move swiftly, minimizing the rainfall amounts and likely salvaging at least half of the Mother’s Day weekend. This movement will allow dry air to move in from west to east across the region.

The weekend is expected to be dry in various areas, offering flexibility for outdoor activities, yard work, and Mother’s Day celebrations. The storm’s progress may bring clearing skies and sunshine by Saturday afternoon in parts of New York and New England. Maine is likely to see rain persist throughout Saturday but should clear up by Mother’s Day.

With the return of sunshine, temperatures are forecasted to rise. However, chilly nights are still possible despite daytime warming trends. Enjoy the weekend and the improving weather conditions with your loved ones!

Unusually cold temperatures are expected in the interior Northeast this weekend, possibly reaching frosty levels on Saturday night and Sunday night. As we head into early next week, clouds and scattered rain from a storm to the south will move into parts of Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio. The extent and speed of this moisture reaching farther north will be determined by the path of the Southern storm.
