The MLB commissioner, Rob Manfred, confirmed on Tuesday, July 15, that the Tampa Bay Rays will host any 2025 playoff games at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Despite concerns about the stadium’s small capacity of just over 11,000, Manfred stated that the Rays will not move to a larger park for the postseason. He emphasized that the rule remains for teams to play in their home stadiums during the World Series.
Owner Stuart Sternberg has agreed to a $1.7 billion deal for the Rays. The team had a record of 50-47 at the All-Star break, placing them in fourth in the AL East division and fourth in the AL wild-card race. Plans are in place for Tropicana Field to be ready for the 2026 season opener, but contingencies are prepared in case of delays.
While hosting wild card or divisional playoff games at Steinbrenner Field poses few issues, concerns arise for potential AL championship series or World Series games due to the limited seating. This would impact postseason revenue sharing and television coverage. Manfred reassured that the Rays will stay in Tampa for their playoff games, and any potential changes will be communicated accordingly.
